Vaccines
Hello!
I'm lucky enough to be spending a couple of weeks in South Africa early next year.
I've looked into the various jabs I'll need and am a bit freaked! There are 4 or 5 that you have to have, and another load that are "sometimes recommended".
I'm terrified of needles as it goes so the fewer I need to have the better as far as I'm concerned. Anyone know the real risks of not having these jabs or can give me any advice?!!!
Thanks
xx

Hi Mary,
The best thing to do is to go and chat to your GP. He/she will know exactly what you need.
If the vaccines are essential, then I would say grit your teeth and go for it...a little needle jab is much better than a nasty illness.
I went to South Africa a few years ago and had people hyping up how awful the Yellow Fever vaccine is. I was terrified but it wasn't nearly as awful as I thought it would be and was over pretty quickly!
Those which are "sometimes recommended" depend on the frequency of travel or how long you're staying but as I said your GP should be able to advise.
I would also ask your GP about malaria precautions too and make sure tetanus and polio are up to date.
Chances are you'll be fine but it's always worth being cautious.
Most of all though have fun. South Africa is an amazing place - I'm sure you'll love it!!
